Of course it's true! Why would I ask? It seems to surprise people though, that Janet Frame rode motorbikes and motor scooters. She wasn't "other wordly", she was, in her own words, a "practical" person, robust and independent.
Mind you the motorbike she bought on winning the New Zealand Book Award for Fiction for LIVING IN THE MANIOTOTO, was only a Suzuki F50 (50 cc) which is a pretty tame machine!
